Moreno Bakery History
Moreno fled Cuba in 1993. In the hopes of reaching his aunt in the United States, he boarded a motor boat with eight pals and two children. After a week at sea near the Bahamas, the yacht ran out of gasoline. The Coast Guard discovered them and took them to safety in America. Moreover, Moreno would have most likely been repatriated to Cuba under the U.S.-Cuba Migration Accord, which went into force in 1994. It only enabled Cuban refugees who arrived in the United States to apply for permanent residency. Moreno ultimately made his way to Tampa and secured a position at La Segunda Central Bakery in Ybor City.
Furthermore, he met Susan, a client manager at Bank of America, while there. They married in 2000 and relocated to Valrico in 2002. In 2004, he became a naturalized citizen. They opened the bakery on Robertson Street in 2008 and have seen it expand from a few dozen customers each day to over 300 currently, with 700 on Christmas Eve.
The need for a larger facility became obvious, but they didn’t want to disrupt their clients’ habits.
After nearly two years of investigating locations and considering satellite operations in places like Riverview and New Tampa, the Morenos will relocate approximately 500 feet to 737 W. A 10,000-square-foot structure on Brandon Blvd. near Wing House. They plan to close the existing bakery on July 20 and reopen at the new location on August 5.
The compact arrangement was OK when just one person was working. There are currently 29 employees, including the Morenos, on the payroll. They put in an additional eight to nine hours of work each day to finish the expansion. Additionally, customers could anticipate better drink selections, a brand-new soup and sandwich station, and a bigger standalone coffee bar. While other Tampa bakeries, such as La Segunda, have become known for delivering Cuban bread to businesses around the country. Moreno Bakery has simpler goals, with Cuban bread and a Cuban American at the helm.
